Cramps & PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome)
One of the most common symptoms of hormonal imbalance is PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome). Women with PMS or PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) have been found to have abnormal levels of serotonin during the week or so before the onset of their menstrual period. It is not surprising to note, however, that the symptoms of PMS and PMDD mimic those of women who are experiencing perimenopause. The hormonal changes that take place in a woman’s body before menstruation and before menopause both have an influence on brain chemistry. The symptoms of PMS, as well as perimenopause include cramps, mood swings or depression, irritability, food cravings, tiredness, bloating, headaches and poor impulse control. Both conditions, although typically occurring at different stages in a woman’s life, can be treated with natural hormone supplementation.
Conventional Treatment vs. Natural Alternative
Conventional medicine has often sought to treat the symptoms that characterize PMS, rather than the hormonal imbalance that is the underlying cause. Some women suffering from PMS have been found to also experience changes or dips in their serotonin levels in the week before their period. Doctors, therefore, often prescribe antidepressants to relieve their symptoms.
These serotonin boosters, which are also used to treat chronic depression and serious mood disorders, do not come without side effects. Yet, women do have a choice. Since the symptoms of PMS are also linked to changes in the body’s level of hormones, it is also possible to treat this condition using natural hormone replacement, and eliminate the risk of any accompanying list of side effects.
